Welcoming your new baby into the world is a wonderful thing, but it can also pass by in a blur. If you are reading this while pregnant, then deciding on your newborn photographer now means one less thing to do once your little one has arrived! Future you will be thankful you were so organised! But with so many photographers out there, how do you choose the right one for you?

Here are some important questions to ask when choosing a newborn photographer, to make sure your little one is in safe, experienced hands – and that you’ll love your final images, and the experience too!

Is the Photographer Safety Trained?

Newborn photography is a specialist skill. Your baby’s safety should ALWAYS come first. Ask your photographer what training they’ve had when it comes to posing and handling newborns. Are they trained in newborn safety? Do they know how to safely support a baby’s head and neck during posing? Have they taken courses in safe wrapping techniques?

At Kerry Jones Photography, your baby’s safety is my number one priority. I’ve completed specialist training in newborn posing and safety, and every pose is done gently, with your baby’s comfort and wellbeing at the centre of everything.

How Much Experience Do They Have?

There’s no substitute for experience – especially when working with tiny, unpredictable humans! Find out how long the photographer has been working with newborns. Experience often means they can spot the signs of a sleepy spell coming on or know how to soothe a baby who just needs a little extra cuddling, instead of another feed when they aren’t hungry.

I’ve been photographing newborn babies in Hull for over 10 years, and every session has taught me more about what babies need and how to make the experience relaxing and enjoyable for parents, too.

Are They Properly Insured?

It might not be the first thing you think to ask, but it’s important: is your photographer fully insured? Public liability insurance and equipment cover are signs that your photographer takes their business – and your baby’s safety – seriously.

I’m fully insured for all my photography work, giving you peace of mind that you’re working with a trusted professional.

What Is Their Editing Style – and Do You Like It?

Some photographers offer natural, light retouching, while others lean into more artistic or heavily edited styles. Do they remove temporary blemishes like milk spots, scratches, or bruises from birth? Do you prefer a clean, timeless look, or something more stylised?

At Kerry Jones Photography, I lightly retouch your images to remove any temporary marks while keeping your baby looking like themselves. You’ll always receive beautifully edited images that feel natural, soft, and timeless.

Do You Know What’s Included in the Price?

Pricing can vary a lot between photographers, so don’t be afraid to ask for a full breakdown. What’s included in the session fee? How much do digital collections cost? Albums? Wall art? What are the costs if you’d like to purchase additional copies?

You don’t want to fall in love with your gallery and then realise the extras are out of your budget. At Kerry Jones Photography, I’m completely transparent about pricing, with no hidden surprises. I offer a range of packages to suit different needs, and you’ll always know the costs upfront – so you can plan and budget accordingly.

Do They Work from a Studio or Travel to You?

Some photographers work from a home or commercial studio, while others offer mobile sessions in your home. There’s no right or wrong – just what works best for you. If you’re considering a studio session, ask about parking, facilities, and what you need to bring.

My cosy studio in Hull is purpose-built for newborn photography, with everything you need already here. It means you can show up to me and not have to tidy your home to make room for a photographer and their equipment. I have a big selection of props and blankets in my studio which you wouldn’t have access to if I were mobile.  You only need to bring baby and their essentials – I take care of the rest!

What’s the Overall Experience Like?

Newbron photography is about more than just the final photos – it’s about the whole experience. Questions to ask yourself include, do you feel comfortable talking to your photographer? You’re going to be chatting to them for a couple of hours during your photoshoot, so it’s important that you get on!  Do they take the time to answer your questions? Do they seem confident and calm around babies? Taking a look at their website and reading reviews will help you to learn these things, as well as your communication with them.

Newborn sessions at Kerry Jones Photography are designed to be calm, unhurried, and baby-led. I’ll work around your little one’s needs and create a relaxed, supportive space where everyone feels at ease.
