I just love a cake smash as a wonderful way to celebrate your little one’s first birthday. But they can sometimes end in tears… it can be overwhelming to have so many new experiences all at once. With my many years of experience doing these, I’ve learned that there are some simple things you can do to help prepare and to ensure that you get the very best results and most beautiful portraits from your cake smash.

So, if your little one is about to turn one, it’s time to celebrate in style with a cake smash photoshoot! Bur first, let’s make sure we’ve got everything covered for the ultimate cake smash experience so we all have a great time. Here’s how to prepare like a pro:

1. Dress to Impress

We can start your cake smash photoshoot with family photographs, if you want. Plan your outfits in advance and it makes it so much easier to get out of the house in time on cake day! Coordinating outfits for the whole family is a great way to achieve some beautiful, styled portraits. Aim for the same tones or colours, rather than matching outfits, for the very best styled look.

2. Snacks and Drinks for the Model!

As you know, your little one can go from happy to hangry in no time at all. While it’s nice for your baby to be a little snacky during their session, so they have an appetite for cake, being too hungry can be a recipe for disaster. So make sure they eat before leaving home, and bring a snack and a drink with you. Eating cake can be thirsty work so stopping for a drink is often necessary!

3. Embrace the Mess Before the Big Day

Some babies don’t really like being messy – which can make things difficult when that’s what your photos are all about! To make sure that your little one is happy and smiling in their photos, it’s a good idea to introduce mess and cake to them in the weeks leading up to the big day. Encourage them to feed themself and play with their food. How about kinetic sand, or play-dough? There are lots of fun messy options to explore! It’s a great idea to try a taste of cake too. This way, when cake smash day arrives, they’ll be all smiles and ready to dig into that delicious cake!

4. Bring Their Favorite Snack

If your little one is a bit hesitant about diving into the cake, don’t worry, we’ve got some tricks to get the best photographs! Bring along their favourite snack – fruit, biscuits or crisps – whatever you know that they love.  When their favourites are on hand, we can sneakily hide these goodies inside the cake to get some interaction and munching, even if they aren’t keen on the cake. Who knew eating cake could be this much fun?

5. Towel Time: Wrap Up the Fun

After all the smashing is done, I like to finish off with a bubbly bath. It’s often the favourite part of the session! We splash, and get clean, and have lots of fun. After that, it’s time to wrap up your little one in a warm towel. It’s great if you can bring your own – especially if you have a favourite, or one with your baby’s name on! If you bring one in plain white or a colour that matches your cake smash theme, then we can include it in some adorable post-bath moments, all snuggled up and oh-so-cute!
