When you’re growing a tiny human, there’s a lot to think about — from nursery paint colours to birth plans. A maternity photoshoot might be on your wishlist, but it’s totally normal to have a few nervous questions before booking.
At Kerry Jones Photography, I know that not everyone feels instantly confident in front of the camera (especially when your body is changing daily!). So, let’s go through some of the most common questions that expectant parents often want to ask — but sometimes feel a little shy about.
What if I don’t feel confident or don’t like how I look right now?
You are not alone in feeling this way! In fact, almost every mum-to-be who walks through my door says the same thing! My job is to make you feel beautiful and relaxed.
During your session, I’ll guide you through flattering poses, gentle movements, and natural expressions that show off your bump and make you feel amazing. You don’t need to know how to pose – that’s my job! Most clients leave saying, “I can’t believe that’s me!” (and that’s exactly how I want you to feel).
Do I have to show my bare bump
Absolutely not, unless you want to! Your maternity session is completely tailored to your comfort level. Some women love the look of flowing dresses that reveal their bump, while others prefer to keep things covered and focus on the emotion and connection instead.
There’s no right or wrong — just what feels right for you.
What should I wear — and do you provide outfits?
You don’t have to go shopping unless you want to. I have collected a wardrobe of beautiful maternity dresses and fabrics, designed to flatter every shape and size. You’re also welcome to bring along your own favourite pieces if you have something special in mind. Lots of ladies like to have photos in their baby shower dress, to remember and share.
Before your shoot, I’ll send you some styling tips so you know exactly what photographs well (and what to avoid, like busy patterns or tight elastic that can leave marks on your skin).
What if I feel awkward posing, or don’t know what to do?
Don’t worry about posing – that’s my job! I’ll guide you every step of the way. You won’t need to think about where to put your hands or how to stand; I’ll demonstrate and direct you carefully, and if there’s anything that feels uncomfortable, then we just won’t do it.
If you have parts of your body that you love, then we will make sure to make the most of them. And if there are parts of your changing body that you aren’t so confident about, then just let me know and I can work my magic!
When is the best time in pregnancy to book a maternity session?
The ideal time for your maternity photoshoot is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this point in your pregnancy, your bump has a lovely shape, but you’ll still feel comfortable enough to move around and enjoy your session.
If you’re a little earlier or later — don’t worry! Every pregnancy is different, and we’ll make it work for you.
What happens if I go into labour early or need to reschedule?
Life (and babies!) don’t always run to schedule. If your baby decides to arrive early, or you need to reschedule because you are unwell or in hospital, I completely understand.
We’ll simply rearrange your session for another date, or you can use your booking fee towards a newborn photoshoot instead. Flexibility is built into every booking.
Do you retouch or edit the images, and will you keep my stretch marks?
I edit each image with care to make sure you look your absolute best, while still looking like you. I’ll soften distractions such as blemishes or redness, but I don’t believe in over-editing or removing the features that make your body uniquely yours.
Stretch marks are entirely your call… if you’d like to keep them, I will. If you’d prefer to have them removed or reduced, I can do that too!
If there’s something you feel self-conscious about, you can always let me know. I’ll make sure you love the final result.
Ready to celebrate your bump?
Your maternity photoshoot isn’t just about how you look, it’s about capturing this stage of your story, and your baby’s journey. Whether you want something simple and timeless in the studio or a relaxed outdoor session surrounded by nature, I’ll make sure it feels calm, comfortable, and beautifully you.
