Welcoming your new baby into the world is an exciting time, and capturing those early moments in a newborn photoshoot can be a wonderful experience for you as new parents, and a way to create beautiful portraits of your new family. When you’re preparing for your session, one of the questions I hear a lot from new parents is: What should we wear?
Here’s everything you need to know to feel comfortable and confident during your newborn photoshoot:
1. Dress in Light Layers
Newborn photoshoots are toasty warm! I heat the room to a cosy temperature for your baby, so they are comfortable sleeping naked without being woken up by the chill. While this ensures your little one is happy and settled, it can feel a bit warm for you. Wearing light layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the session.
2. Choose Comfort Over Style
In those early days after baby arrives, comfort is key. Loose, baggy clothes can feel like a lifesaver, especially if you’re still recovering from giving birth. If you have had a c-section then make sure you don’t have a waistband that will rub on your scar! Opt for outfits that don’t feel restrictive and allow you to move freely while cuddling or holding your baby.
3. Wear Neutral Colours
I always recommend plain, neutral tones like beige, cream, white, brown, or black. These shades are classic and timeless, ensuring that your photos will still look stunning years from now. Avoid bold patterns or bright colours, as they can draw attention away from what truly matters – your beautiful connection with your baby.
4. Be Prepared to Be in the Photos
I adore capturing parents with their new baby – it’s one of the most special parts of the session! Even if you’re not feeling completely picture-perfect in those early weeks, I encourage you to get in the frame. These images will mean so much to you and your little one in the years to come.
If you’re worried about your appearance, feel free to bring along your makeup bag for a quick touch-up once you arrive. But remember, the beauty of these photos comes from your love and connection with your baby.
5. What About Baby?
For your baby, there’s no need to bring outfits. Many of the photos will be taken with your little one swaddled or undressed in my warm and cosy studio. I have a selection of wraps and props to choose from to use in your session.
I completely understand that getting out of the house with a newborn can be a challenge, and your newborn session may well be the first time you’ve ventured out together. Please don’t worry if you forget something or feel rushed. My studio is a welcoming, relaxed space where you can take your time settling in. The most important thing is to be present and enjoy this special moment with your baby.
